Since I have decided to write a few more of the our life with autism blogs, thought I might want to do a little bit of a back story. I have a few blog posts up about our journey so sorry if I repeat a few things. First off I have 2 boys and they both have autism, 50% chance of it happening and that is the kind of lottery I win (says a lot about my life). My older son is 9, my younger son is 4, since I am going to be writing about them more often maybe I should give them nicknames. I will call my older son gamer j and my younger son is farmer c. This should make it easier when I write so I don't have to constantly say younger and older son.
Gamer j is 9 years old, in the 4th grade at public school and he is considered high functioning. If they still diagnosed asperbergers that is where he would fall. Of course when we came along they had just made the diagnosis an umbrella. He is like a 9 year old he thinks farts and poop are funny and he loves video games. He is not like a 9 year old when he talks, most of the time he talks like a mini adult. He also likes adult company compared to kid company. He is in public school for now, as stated in my previous post he has never really liked school, I feel at some point he will have to be home schooled but I am making that the absolute last resort. We found a good fit at his current school (we went to 3 different schools). He is a funny and sweet boy but that can be over looked when he has his meltdowns. He has sensory issues as well with clothing, sounds and smells. I hope he will be able to control his outbursts and meltdowns with age but we shall see. He is also diagnosed with ADHD, audio sensory disorder and anxiety. His anxiety got so bad we had to put him on medicine, he also uses essential oils to calm him down. With both of those he has been doing better with being at school.
Farmer c is 4 years old, he is at a private autism school in our area. He is non-verbal midfuctioning. He was diagnosed at 3 years old, it did not take as long for us to see it with him. When your child is non-verbal it makes it a bit easier. I will say that his school is helping him so much, he is starting to say words, not consistently but he will throw one out every now and then! He seems to be recognizing colors which is a big deal to me. He is a rotten little buddy for sure, he keeps me on my toes and goes from one mess to another. It is like he looks for things to get in to but I have heard that is normal for any 4 year old. He is also very hard headed, if he wants to do something he is going to do it! I am hoping within the next couple of years we will have words and communication but only time will tell.
Don't know how many blogs I will be doing about our autism journey I am hoping to do a couple a month. Guess we will have to see how it goes. I am sure if you are an autism parent you already know no two kids are the same. That is for sure the case with my two boys they have the same dna but their autism is totally different. So as a parent it is harder on me cause what works for one does not work for the other. But like I have said before, we take it one day at a time and just keep swimming.
